Welcome

Thank you for visiting Companions along the Way! You are invited to learn about the value of spiritual direction and even to schedule a session, where you will have the opportunity to talk about your relation to God, including your doubts, questions, and most of all your yearning for God.

There is a deep, hopeful yearning at the center of every person. It nudges us to seek fulfillment beyond things, status, wealth, or power. That yearning is a gracious invitation to intimate communion with God.

The following prayer by St Anselm of Canterbury beautifully expresses this desire for God:

O my God, teach my heart where and how to seek you, where and how to find you. You are my God, and You are my all, and I have never seen you. You have made me and remade me. You have bestowed on me all the good things I possess. Still I do not know You. I have not yet done that for which I was made. Teach me to seek You. I cannot seek You unless You teach me or find You unless You show Yourself to me. Let me seek You in my desire. Let me desire You in my seeking. Let me find You by loving You; Let me love You when I find You.

This intimate relationship with God is a life-long journey. This journey or path is referred to in Scripture as the Way. It is not intended that we walk the Way alone. In the challenges and mysteries of the loves and sufferings of life, we need Companions along the Way. We find these to a great extent in our places of worship and Christian friends, but sometimes we need more. We need a companion where we can share our journey in an environment that is prayerful, safe, and confidential. We can find such a companion in a spiritual director.

In the ministry of Companions along the Way, individual and group spiritual direction are offered, which are described under the tab of Spiritual Direction. The other tabs of Practices and Congregational Practices are resources that I hope will nurture your communion with God and will open the Way for you and your church to the movement of the Spirit for its mission and spiritual community.
